Under Construction

This is Greystones Harbour which was under redevelopment over the last couple of years until
the developers ran into some difficulty with the funding, and so all work has come to a halt with the harbour area now surrounded by  builders's hoarding. The residents of Greystones are more than a little peeved at this situation and many meetings and protests continue to be held to try to, at least, have the hoarding removed and allow reasonable access to the harbour area.  Quite simply, the people want their harbour back!

My Favourite Part Of Town

Theme Day in the City Daily Photo community and today it's My Favourite Part of Town. So, sticking with Wicklow Town, although this blog covers the wider area of County Wicklow, my favourite part is down by South Quay where there's always a variety of colourful things to shoot.

On this side of the river, kids play on an old wreck while below, on the other side, boats from the whelk fleet unload their catch.

The Country Fountain

 

Spotted the other day, on a bend in the very quiet Clogga Road between Arklow and Clogga Beach in Co Wicklow, this old drinking fountain or is it just a water pump?  Maybe a little rusty round the edges, but it still functions.

Photo Of The Year 2010

Today is Theme Day in the City Daily Photo community and this is when we get to choose our best photo from the previous year.

I like boats and harbours and I especially like the harbour in Wicklow Town so this photo, originally titled Harbour Lights, is my pick for best photo from the previous year.  Happy New Year everyone.

McTime

Now a McDonalds outlet, the former Town Hall, originally a covered market house, was commissioned by the 11th Earl of Meath to look down the main street of Bray. Designed by Thomas Manly Deane and his assistant Guy Dawber (who later returned to England and ran a successful country house practice), the Town Hall is reminiscent of medieval market houses in England or Germany. The building was built in 1882-3.

The market house was closed  in the mid 1940s, but the Town Hall's other major role continues.  The upper floor, reached by a stone staircase at the east side and with an open timber roof and oak chimney-pieces with carved panels, was always intended to serve as Bray's council chamber, originally for meetings of the town commissioners and today for Bray Town Council - it is also regularly used for local functions.

In 1991, after major refurbishment, the ground floor was converted into a high-ceilinged restaurant, and in 1997 this was controversially taken over by McDonald's.

The DART

The DART (Dublin Area Rapid Transit) is the rail line running along the coast of Dublin, from Malahide and Howth southwards as far as Greystones, Co Wicklow.  The DART system is administered by the national rail operator, Iarnród Éireann (Irish Rail).  This is all very convenient for anyone living near coastal areas.

Today we are at the train station in Bray which is only a few yards away from the attractive seafront which we've featured here several times in earlier posts.

Beach Graffiti

Another weekday visit to the beach at Brittas Bay, Co Wicklow and, of course, it's deserted.  Even this lifeguard station is closed up.  But someone has left their mark - I won't dignify it by describing it as art or even handiwork - so let's just call it Beach Grafitti - Wicklow style!

Today, we return to the monthly market at Macreddin Village, Co Wicklow for our September 1st  Open Air Market feature on City Daily Photo Theme Day.  Above we see Teach Hilda's market stand specialising in the import of organic foods from southern Italy.

Bright Colours

It's the 1st of August so, that means it's Theme Day and today we have Bright Colours from a recent trip to the funfair at Bray Summerfest - well fairly bright!
